Help Break the Isolation
Pathways will change the way people move and interact on the Island. They will provide the foundation to all people regardless of their age or ability and improve quality of life, provide new entrepreneurial and innovative job opportunities, break social isolation, expand resident expectations and enhance visitor experiences.
Endowment Fund
When the pathway system has been built and maintained the Endowment Fund will ensure that when unexpected downturns or disasters occur VITAL will be able to preserve and enhance the system for future generational needs. Your donation will ensure that the pathways and parks remain clean, safe and inviting to all users.
Operational & Planning
VITAL is a non-profit that relies on Volunteers. We do not have paid Staff or Office Space. Despite these cost saving measures funding is needed to advance the extensive projects for office supplies, advertising, community engagement needs, media, low cost early action demonstrations to test plans and surveys, legal assistance, tax obligations and event planning. Your dollars will fund VITAL work to plan and build high quality, durable and resilient multi-use pedestrian supported infrastructure to meet present and future needs.
Trail Maintenance
St. Croix’s tropical climate creates rapid, lush regrowth. The use of advanced trail designs, varied surface types and shade from local trees assist in reduction of grooming needs, however maintenance is a constant process. Community engagement to adopt trail and pathway sections along with government cutting intervention is not enough to keep the pedestrian supported infrastructure in pristine condition. There is also the maintenance required to signage, benches, structures and trees.
VITAL currently maintains approximately 14 miles of dirt trails in the North-West area of St. Croix. To date these trails have been cleared and maintained using volunteer labor and some paid labor along with equipment. VITAL needs help to keep these trails open and to provide gas/oil as well as repair costs of tools. Having a working budget in 2019 will allow new trails to be cleared and made available to the public while maintaining those that are now established.
VITAL’s board has absorbed the costs of growing the corporation and gaining community support during 2017-2018. Costs are now increasing as we move from developing the corporation and writing grant applications to planning of new pathways and bringing the projects to the community to gain their input such as the recent Agricultural Fair Survey.

The VI Trail Alliance associates and board members have been utilizing their personal equipment to clear trails in the North-West Sector of St. Croix for two years. VITAL has expanded their vision during this time as well as their partners identifying new locations for trails. Funding is now required to purchase equipment to get the job done and to maintain the trails going forward.
