This project was made possible by an award from the National Park Trust and National Park Service via a nomination from NPS RTCA
01/2022 Update: This project will be completed at the end of January 2022. A new 3 mile trail referred to as the Upper Spur Trail and the Lower Spur Trail joins with existing trails and creates a loop. Picnic tables and benches are being installed at rest stops for walkers. Improvements have been made to the NPS Well Tower Site. This trail provides the public access to a safe walking/biking trail under the natural canopy of the rain forest. Signs will be installed along the route and a downloadable map will be available for users.
For a collaborative project with local partners such as the National Historical Park & Ecological Preserve, the Dept. of Agriculture, DPW, My Brothers Workshop, The Walkability Institute of the VI, hiking, walking & biking organizations, and volunteers.
The FY21 Challenge Cost Share Grant, provides funding in the amount of $25,000 to create a new spur trail. This Spur Trail will link existing trails on the Windsor Farm agriculture lands, to the NPS Water Tower Historical Site. The funding will be utilized to blaze a trail, provide historical, directional, and endangered species signage at the Water Tower Trail Head, install seating along the route, provide a down loadable map.
Vital currently maintains approx. 8 miles of trails on Windsor Farm. This funding will establish a public access Trail System for walking and biking. VITAL plans to expand this system in the future and looks forward to developing a high-quality trail for the health and enjoyment of all who utilize it.
