VITAL gets assistance from the Office of Samuel Sane, St. Croix Administrator
Over the last 6 months the VI Trail Alliance has worked to build approx. 2.6 miles of new trails, for public access, on the Windsor Farm Properties owned and managed by the Dept. of Agriculture. The area between the pristine forest property and the roadside revealed piles of garbage, rusted vehicles and evidence of old shelters. Our project funds had been exhausted so in the final days prior to the opening we turned to the St. Croix Administrator, Mr. Sanes. Mr. Sanes met on the property with our lead organizer, Alma Winkfield on the Tuesday. He came out again on the Wednesday with a contractor. Thursday morning the work began in earnest. Volunteers came out to assist with the garbage clean up despite the very short notice. Volunteers included 5 members of the NPS – Friends of the Park, the Hiking Association, and VITAL Team leaders and trail supporters. At the same time a group of dedicated trail volunteers were installing the remaining signs throughout the project, to be ready for the planned soft opening the following day.
We thank Mr. Sanes and Mr. Flemming & crew and the 17 volunteers who came out to get the job done despite the rain, mud, jack spaniel stings and heavy lifting. The trail system is now open to the public. Let’s keep it clean!
