Bike Safety & Design Workshop

Designing for Bicyclist Safety is a course for teaching why bicycle travel accommodations should be included in the transportation network, create an understanding of key safety principles for bicyclist, and teach about design treatments, safety countermeasures, and the latest national guidance and best practices.

Bicyclists are vulnerable users nd bikeway networks should serve the range of bicyclist skill levels. Many more people would likely choose to ride a bike if there were bikeways where they felt safe. The course discussed design features for a safer and more comfortable bike riding experience on shoulders, shared lanes, bike lanes, and separated bike lanes. It also discussed safety countermeasures for interactions and other conflict points. Participants were provided with information on various tools that are available to analyze and evaluate safety.

The workshop took place in both St. Thomas and St. Croix.
